Sort Your-Shelves Out!
I mean, what have you even got on them?

When I was a kid, we lived in a huge Victorian house and one of the great features of the house was the fireplaces. They were fantastic, and some of them even worked.
The chimney breasts of the all the fireplaces were very deep, And it was the same breast from ground floor to top (they were very clever those Victorians).
The breasts were central, (mono-breasts :)) What this means is that either side was set back from the breast and in the dining room. Anyway, mum decided she would put a set of 6 very deep shelves either side of the breast. It was easy enough to do. Just fix some slats of wood onto the wall and then place some thin planks on top.
These shelves were right up to the ceiling

Great storage idea. Like drawers.
Yes, drawers! The little tidy boxes, that you can easily slide in and out and put handy objects in, from kitchen utensils to clothes.
One time, ( I am digressing now) I had a kitchen fitted and I was asked how may drawers I wanted. I asked for as few as possible.
Why?
Well I am not the most organised of people. So drawers in my house, even kitchen drawers, if I am not careful, will all end up having the same things in them. In one drawer you will find pens, a small notepad, an old phone charger, bits of broken plastic from…something, a piece of paper with a phone number on it and no name (I hate that!), a calling card, the back cover a remote control and one leaking AAA battery.
You get the picture right?
Then you open another drawer and it has the EXACT same things in it…! (It’s spooky)
I am not going to repeat the list.
Drawers are handy for a quick tidy. A little too easy. If somebody texts you to say they will be round in 5 — Drawers are the best thing ever! Just shove everything into your drawers. (not those ones!)
I had a maximum of 4 drawers in my kitchen!
It was more than enough. I had 4 fake ones that I kept forgetting were fake.
Shelves are like drawers.
Unless you are one of those tidy people that have a place for everything and everything in its place, you might make the mistake of saying to yourself,
I will just put this up there…
Then before you know it everything you own is on that top shelf. Can’t find the remote control? That is because it was wrapped in your sweaty gym t-shirt you threw up there when your girlfriend came round. That book you were reading but never managed to get past the first chapter, your phone charger…
Can’t find the cat — yes, he is up there too. (It is nice and cozy with all those sweaty gym t-shirts).
Curiously it is the last place you look for things.
So what is my point here…?
Ah yes, there is a point!
Are our shelves a reflection of ourselves? (try saying that after a few gins…) Do these habits come from our psych? If we tidy up our shelves, will our minds feel the benefit too?
I believe so.
The more we organise our physical lives, the better we feel mentally. Have you ever done a big spring clean and then sat down and marveled at the mere sight of it all? Or rearranged the sitting room and felt like you have molded the very universe itself? (maybe I need to get out more.)
You go to a drawer, looking for something and you actually find it!
You place your keys in the same place every time you come home and they are there when you are looking for them and not in the fridge! (Okay it happened just the once!)
So go tidy your room, go and sort out that drawer. You might even find something you lost 2 years ago!
Let’s hope it is not the cat.
:)
