You did very well! I came to Portugal in 89 and learned on my own in 10 months (there about) I had a teach yourself book. I was thrown in at the deep end and only heard and spoke to Portuguese people. I watched quiz shows in portuguese, which come highly recommended as they have great content and I watched Brazilian soaps. Music was also another great help, finding songs you like and learning them.
